Dark fiber refers to optical fiber strands already installed in the ground but not yet “lit” by active equipment. How is dark fiber different from a leased line?
With a leased line you buy managed bandwidth; with dark fiber you lease the physical strands and provide your own equipment, so capacity and technology are entirely under your control and scale without changing the contract.
Do I need my own equipment?
Yes — dark fiber is unlit, so you connect your own transmission equipment at each end. We can advise on requirements and provide colocation where needed.
Can dark fiber be used as a backup route?
Yes. Many customers use a second, diverse fiber path as a low-cost backup for their primary fiber links.
What traffic can run over it?
Any — because you choose the equipment, dark fiber carries both TDM and IP traffic and any protocol your equipment supports.
What if my site is outside a fiber-rich area?
Vision Telecom colocation is available to extend the last mile into areas without existing fiber.
What does IRU mean?
An Indefeasible Right of Use is a long-term, exclusive right to use specific fiber strands, common between carriers and large enterprises.
How much bandwidth can dark fiber carry?
It depends on your optics. The same fiber can run 1, 10, 100 Gbps or more with DWDM, without changing the fiber.
Who maintains the fiber?
Vision Telecom maintains and repairs the physical fiber; you manage the equipment that lights it.
